How to Choose a Long-Range Drone?

Long-range drones

Video transmission is absolutely paramount to aerial photography and cinematography. Being able to see clearly in real-time what your drone camera is viewing over large distances is vital. The quality of any long range drone transmission depends on many factors, and you should consider them all whenever a company advertises its products. Wind speed, battery levels, radio interference, and obstacles between your drone and the controller all influence the livefeed and your control over your drone. Let’s take a closer look at everything you need to know about transmission to help you purchase a quality long range drone.

Transmission Live Feed Quality

The quality of the feed you receive is important for you to be able to see what your long range drone is seeing. A high-resolution transmission feed allows you to make tiny adjustments to your shots that can make the difference between amateur and professional photography. We recommended choosing a drone with as high transmission resolution possible, such as the 1080p livestream feed offered on Mavic Air 2, Mavic 2, or the Inspire 2.

Transmission Stability

The more stable your transmission is, the less chance you will lose signal between your drone and your remote controller. More advanced transmission systems, such as those featured in DJI camera drones, use dual frequencies of 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz, which provide a more stable transmission feed and a greater transmission distance. Lower transmission latency and the ability to download images to your device while the drone is still in the air are all advantages gained through advanced transmission technologies.

Anti-interference ensures you can fly smoothly wherever you are without any interruptions to your flight experience. With dual transmission frequencies, the drone can switch between frequencies during real-time flight, which provides the best performance. Additionally, anti-interference transmission technology utilizes a two-way communications system to help further maintain a stable video feed, even when flying through challenging environments.

Transmission Types

Long range drone

WiFi transmission is featured on Spark, Mavic Air, and Mavic Mini. WiFi allows pilots to fly their drone using a dedicated controller or simply their mobile device. This transmission type is better for everyday flight and taking shots on the go, suitable for users that don’t want to waste time connecting a controller to their drone. For long range drones, OcuSync 2.0 and Lightbridge transmissions are excellent choices.

OcuSync was first introduced on the DJI Mavic Pro and is a wireless transmission system that transmits video signals with low latency over long distances using the 2.4GHz frequency range. The original OcuSync technology provided pilots with HD video feeds in both 720p and 1080p, with 720p transmission offering up to 4 miles usage.

OcuSync2.0 is a significantly improved transmission system. The ability to broadcast over 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz, switch between the two frequencies in real-time, and avoid interference means pilots can receive a low latency 1080p video feed over larger distances.

All drones mentioned above use OcuSync2.0 transmission, with the exception of the Inspire 2, which uses Lightbridge technology. Let’s find out exactly what Lightbridge transmission is.

Lightbridge is a professional transmission system that offers professional HD broadcasting, low latency responsive navigation, a long range up to 5 km, and an integrated design that is embedded into the remote controller. Users can transmit their video feed to multiple secondary devices such as viewing monitors, and additional controllers can also be used by filmmakers who wish to concentrate on getting their shot while a second person pilots the aircraft. Lightbridge technology also chooses the best transmission channel automatically based on your environment, providing the smoothest flight experience.

Flight Performance

DJI Inspire 2

Flight Time

Fight time and battery performance are the next things you should consider if you are looking to buy a long range drone with a camera. The longer your flight time, the more ground you can cover for any long range photography. The same applies for battery life, which influences how long you can fly your long range drone. It’s important to find a drone that offers the best balance in flight performance, and avoid choosing a drone that offers a one-dimensional performance.

With this in mind, you should take into account all the factors that affect your battery performance such as weather and wind speed. Compare the best drone flight times and take this into consideration with other factors before you make a purchase.

Flight time and battery performance are also influenced by the design of the drone. Look out for a long range drone that is made by reputable drone companies with state-of-the-art innovation and research. A flight time of 30 minutes is around the benchmark you should be looking at, with exceptional drones like the new Mavic Air 2 offering a massive 34 minutes of flight time!

Flight Safety

Next up, we have flight safety, which influences your flight experience, protects others around you, and ensures you can fly confidently. This is one of the most significant considerations for choosing a long range drone because you need to be in control over your drone at all times. Safety can be categorized into several different aspects, which we’ve broken down for you below:

Return to Home (RTH)

One of the most important safety features of DJI drones is the advanced Return to Home (RTH) function. This function allows the drone to return to its take-off position when it detects its battery levels are low, when the transmission signal is lost, or if you command the drone to come back.

Some aspects of the RTH function can be set manually by the pilot and should be checked and adjusted if necessary before each flight. One of the most important features a pilot should check is the RTH altitude. When the RTH function is engaged, the aircraft will climb or descent to the set altitude before beginning its return. You should pay attention to your surroundings when using the RTH setting. Obstacle avoidance systems are active during the RTH flight, but the additional safety of ensuring a safe altitude to clear obstacles is vital for long range flights.

Obstacle Sensors

You should consider what obstacle avoidance technology is available before you choose a long range drone. DJI drones are equipped with a range of sensors, both optical and infrared, that can detect approaching obstacles and make the necessary adjustments to the flight path to avoid them, be it climbing, descending, or even coming to a complete stop.

Camera Performance

Long range drone

At the end of the day, the best long range drone is not only a drone with stable transmission, but also a drone with exceptional camera performance to take advantage of the long range flight capabilities.

Sensor quality is the biggest consideration to make, which affects the creative potential of beginners and professionals. DJI Mavic series drones and Phantom drones all have the latest in camera sensor technology on-board, providing fantastic dynamic range and state-of-the-art low-light performance.

For optimal camera performance in the Mavic series, Mavic 2 Pro takes the lead with a 1“ Hasselblad Camera and adjustable aperture. For stunning new drone tehcnology like 48MP Photo, 8K Hyperlapse, and Smartphoto, the new Mavic Air 2 paves the way for creativity. If professional footage is your aim, then Phantom 4 Pro V2.0‘s 1″ sensor and mechanical shutter will provide you with everything you need.

Professional industry-level footage is easily capable with the Inspire 2, which features an interchangeable camera system that includes the new Zenmuse X7 camera and gimbal system. Users can capture stunning 24MP images with 14 stops of dynamic range, 6K CinemaDNG video, and interchange between world-class lenses quickly and easily.

Intelligent Functions and Modes

Intelligent flight modes are an important consideration if you ant to capture cinematic scenes from different long range distances. You can get closer to your subject, approach them from far away, and obtain some truly unique footage. ActiveTrack and QuickShots make it easy for any pilot to obtain impressive footage from far away.

Long Range Drone Flight Tips

Best long-range drones

Great consideration should always be taken before any drone flight. Read on to discover the most important long range drone flight tips.

Drone Regulations

Always remember to check drone regulations and local laws wherever you fly. It is not permitted to fly in some areas like nature reserves. Always fly within your line of sight, and remember to check in advance if your planned flight conforms to the local regulations.

Weather Conditions

Adverse weather can affect the transmission signal, causing you to lose signal and control over your drone. Always fly in bright, clear conditions. We recommend checking the weather forecast before and during your flight. A number of apps are available that provide detailed weather assessments and forecasts for drone pilots.

Temperature affects the discharge and performance of your drone batteries, which subsequently affects how long and how far you can fly. Fly with fully charged batteries, and remember to always monitor the drone battery life status.

Is there anything along your intended flight path that needs extra attention? Buildings, trees, and other structures can cause interference should they come between you and your drone. This interference will affect your transmission quality, and could potentially cause some signal losses. Fly in an open space away from any large objects.

Monitor Flight

When flying a drone, the most important tip is to stay alert and monitor the flight performance on the app. Don’t allow anything to take your attention away from flying. A sudden gust of wind or a flock of birds could have a significant affect on your transmission and control over your drone.

For above $1000 USD you can purchase a professional drone with professional image quality and performance.

Camera drones come with a ton of features, and it is important to think about these to find the one most suitable for you:

  1. Flight Safety & Reliability

Safety is always a key issue when buying a camera drone. Stable and worry-free flight requires an advanced flight controller, which handles commands intelligently. The more intelligent the processor, the greater the smoother your flight experience will be. Try to find a camera drone with an advanced obstacle avoidance system. Top drones even have features like auto return-to-home when the drone’s battery is running low.

  1. Camera Performance

Good camera drones are powerful tools that have high-definition camera settings for industry-leading image quality. Sensor size, ISO range, shutter speed, photography modes, and more decide which bracket the camera drone will fit. Professional level camera drones will have 1 inch sensors and are able to capture at least 12 megapixels photographs and video in 4K or even 5.2K and RAW formats.

Equally important is the gimbal quality. Aerial photography requires stabilization for capturing smooth footage during flight. That is why we emphasize choosing a top quality gimbal that can reduce the shake resulting from flight. Currently, on the market, there are 2-axis gimbals and 3-axis gimbals, and we strongly recommend going for no less than the latter.

  1. Flight Performance

Video transmission is a vital aspect of aerial photography in that it transmits what the camera captures straight to your phone in real time. If video transmission is delayed or interfered with, you might find it difficult to control your drone’s HD camera, let alone store those carefully captured images. Advanced transmission systems support dual frequencies of both 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz for greater interference resistance, and have a long transmitting distance.

  1. Intelligent Functions

The best camera drones in 2020 are equipped with a handful of smart flight features. These make capturing stunning footage in difficult situations much easier and fun. For example, for times when you are shooting fast-moving objects, a feature like ActiveTrack will direct the camera drone to recognize and track a subject while keeping it in the frame. There are a variety of other intelligent features available on camera drones, so do be sure to check those out before buying yours.

  1. Portability

Portability is the new trend of the camera drone market. Most of the time, it is inconvenient and tough to carry a large, heavy camera drone around. This is particularly the case for those of you who want to shoot when traveling. By that rationale, mini drones make it infinitely easier for you to shoot on the go, no matter if hiking or attending a family barbecue.

  1. Service

Value-added services are crucial factors when deciding which drone manufacturer to go with. Besides the standard warrantee, buying your camera drone from a company that offers in-depth tutorials, personal training, workshops, and so on is a smart decision. What’s more, there is also accidental insurance coverage. For novice pilots, these services are always a big plus.

Mavic Mini: Best Settings & Tips for Flying Indoors

Mavic Mini is the perfect drone for everyday fight. Take a look at our best Mavic Mini indoor flight tips and settings for beginners and experienced pilots. From DJI Fly settings to indoor flight preparation, we’ve got it all covered in this article!

Despite the allure of the great outdoors, bad weather and other uncontrollable factors can make it difficult to enjoy flying your drone. While flying indoors is not recommended unless absolutely necessary, Mavic Mini offers a safe and reliable way to practice flying in a controlled space. With the correct pre-flight procedures, flight modes, and app settings, you can safely take your adventure indoors. Let’s get started with our indoor flying tips!

Pre-Flight Tips

Flying safely is the number one concern when flying indoors. Before you turn Mavic Mini on, make sure you first follow these pre-flight tips.

1. Use Propeller Guards

The Mavic Mini 360° Propeller Guard is a requirement for flying indoors, whether you are a beginner or an experienced pilot. The lightweight guard fully protects you and everything around you by preventing the propellers from hitting any objects. With the propeller guard attached, Mavic Mini offers a maximum flight time of 18 minutes, which is plenty of time to whizz around indoors.

2. Map out Your Environment

Wherever you plan to fly, having a good understanding of your environment will help you fly safely. Once you’ve prepared a safe, controlled space, it’s helpful to visualize or map out your flight path before you start flying.

3. Prepare Your Room

Check out the area, move any large objects away from the center of the room, pay attention to any hanging fixtures, and prepare an empty space for takeoff. In addition to letting everyone know where and when you plan to fly, move your pets to another room where you won’t be flying.

4. Check the Lighting Conditions

This tip might sound simple, but it is absolutely necessary if you have to fly your drone indoors. Only fly during the daytime in well-lit areas, do not attempt to fly at night. While you are indoors, the GPS signal may be lost, which means Mavic Mini will rely on its Vision Positioning Sensors. The drone sensors work best when there is ample light in the room, so we can’t stress enough how important this tip is.

5. Turn on CineSmooth

The next tip is to enter the DJI Fly app and change the flight mode to CineSmooth. This indoor-friendly feature will slow down the movement of your drone, giving you all the precision and control you need to fly safely indoors. You can also adjust the control sensitivity of the gimbal, which gives you more control over your images when you are flying.

6. Turn on Hover

While RTH is an incredibly useful feature to use when you are flying outdoors, remember to select the hover option in the DJI Fly app if you fly indoors. This makes Mavic Mini hover in place using its Vision Sensors if there is any loss of signal.

turn off RTH in DJI Fly App when flying indoor

7. Adjust Exposure Levels

We go back to DJI Fly with our last tip before takeoff. Adjust your exposure levels in the DJI Fly app to ensure you have the optimum visibility from your smartphone. Test out different settings to make sure your flight is safe and your pictures look great.

Flying Tips

Now that pre-flight planning and setup are completed, you’re ready to take off. But before you reach for the remote controller, here are a few essential tips for flying your drone indoors.

1. Manual Take Off

While Auto Take Off is another convenient Mavic Mini feature that is perfect for any outdoor adventure, indoor flying requires a whole new approach. Only use manual takeoff, which ensures you will have complete control over your drone.

2. Monitor Drone Status

Keep checking the DJI Fly app for your real-time drone status. Always keep an eye out for your drone’s battery life and signal connection strength. Indoor environments can interfere with your connection, so fly cautiously indoors.

3. Minimize Your Movements

Keep it simple when you fly indoors. While Mavic Mini offers several different types of QuickShots, do not attempt to use any of these indoors. Your movements should be slow and simple. Practice flying in short straight lines and minimize yaw movements for a safe flying experience.

4. Stay Clear of Objects

Avoid flying anywhere near ceilings, walls, and other objects.

Mavic Mini is an exceptional mini drone that offers plenty of features suitable for flying indoors. Weighing less than 250 g and sporting powerful camera features, the Everyday FlyCam is the ideal drone to continue your creative adventures indoors. Whether you wish to get in a few hours of flight practice or are stuck indoors due to bad weather, flying indoors can be both safe and enjoyable. Pick up Mavic Mini today, follow our indoor flying tips, and prepare yourself for a new world of indoor adventure!

How to Choose a Real Estate Photography Drone

Selecting the right drone for real estate photography comes with understanding your individual needs and how the drones’ capabilities meet or exceed those needs. Let’s take a look at all the factors you need to consider.

Camera Performance

From the 1/2.3” CMOS sensor of Mavic Mini to the S35 sensor of the Inspire 2 outfitted with the Zenmuse X7, there are camera performance levels for all needs. For smaller properties such as family homes, sensors like the 1/2.3” CMOS are more than capable of producing quality images. As your properties and your advertising projects become more extensive, look to tap into your full creative potential with more powerful sensors.

Flight Performance

When choosing a real estate photography drone, speed and battery life are important features to consider. Powerful drones such as the Inspire 2 are capable of reaching speeds up to 58mph (94 kph), which is fantastic for capturing real estate while following fast-moving objects like boats or cars. New drones like the Mavic Air 2 offer up to 34 minutes of battery life, which gives you plenty of time to shoot everything you need. Examine the needs of your project and choose a drone that offers an extensive flight performance.

Flight Safety

The most important thing to consider is keeping yourself, others, and the environment safe around you while you fly. DJI drones offer several flight safety features that make them ideal for real estate photography. Ultralight, portable drones like Mavic Mini offer GPS positioning and vision sensors, but if you’re shooting in complex environments, you should look for a drone with more vision sensors, like the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 or Mavic 2 Pro.

Built-in safety features become more advanced as you move toward more advanced drones. Research the safety features available and choose a drone that is fit for your shooting requirements.

This is a really important factor to consider when buying a real estate drone. If you plan to shoot exciting, dynamic perspectives of a location from various distances, choose a drone with a reliable and extensive transmission. Wi-Fi transmission is great for everyday flying, and it is better suited in open areas where there isn’t much signal interference. OcuSync2.0 is a new transmission type that offers an extended transmission flight distance and better transmission feed quality. Light bridge transmission is the reliable transmission system found on professional and enterprise DJI drones. Do you only need the Wi-Fi transmission found on Mavic Mini, or do you require a more robust transmission system like OcuSync2.0 found on Mavic Air 2? Look at the locations you typically photograph and choose a transmission that supports all your shooting requirements.

Intelligent Functions

Without intelligent flight modes, many of the most awe-inspiring shots in real estate photography could only be captured by pilots with hundreds of flight hours. Intelligent flight modes offer even new pilots the ability to create masterpieces effortlessly. If the type of real estate you film requires dramatic footage and intricate flight patterns, look for drones that offer intelligent flight modes.

Drone size and portability are hugely important when considering a real estate drone. If you are always moving from one location to another, small drones like the Mavic Mini make it incredibly easy to shoot on the go. If you’re looking for a combination between power and portability, Mavic series drones offer a great lineup of options. When ultimate power is your main consideration, larger drones like the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 and the Inspire 2 will be a great choice. We recommend starting with a portable real estate drone and upgrading to an advanced real estate drone as your develop your skills and shooting requirements.

Ease of Use

At the end of the day, the best real estate drone is the one that is easiest to use. The aircraft, remote controller, and software must all be easy for you to use. Look for a proven setup where you can quickly build on your abilities as a photographer and a pilot. Research the features available on the drone’s app and check out all the in-app features before you make a purchase.

Creative Tips for Real Estate Photography

It’s time to discover the best tips for real estate photography. We’ve put together a list of tips that cover creativity, camera settings, and safety.

Aerial Reveal

One of the best shots for real estate is the aerial reveal. Fly your drone over your property to reveal the surrounding landscape. You can also adjust the gimbal pitch and smoothness to add a smooth transition effect to your footage.

Intelligent Flight Modes

Intelligent flight modes offer new pilots and seasoned professionals the ability to create stunning videos of the property and surrounding area. The Point of Interest (POI) intelligent flight mode is one of the best to use for this task. Bring your drone to 150 feet (45 m) above ground level. When prompted to on the app, extend the radius of the circle flight path to around 600-700 feet (200 m). Tilt the gimbal so that approximately 15-20% of the screen shows the horizon. The video will give viewers an immersive idea of what is around the location. Remember to only use intelligent flight modes in large, open areas.

Camera Angles

When shooting just above ground level, it is essential to show the property where it looks the best. The goal of your footage is to showcase the property. Raise the height of your drone to just about the height of the roof. Tilt the camera to 45° and back off just enough to get the property and a little extra space around it in frame. Adding a little bit of space will give you more freedom in the editing process.

Add Labels

Adding labels to aerial images can point out significant attractions and infrastructure around your subject, which can be useful for advertising your location. Most editing software allows for animations or overlays to be added in post-production.

Camera Settings for Real Estate Photography

Let’s take a look at the best camera settings you can use to improve your real estate photography.

Manual Settings

Professional photographers know that when it comes to camera settings, manual settings are a must for full camera control. Automatic settings are helpful, but to truly showcase your real estate subject, shoot with full manual control.

Auto White Balance (AWB)

AWB is an excellent tool for shooting for general photography. For full control over your real estate photography, turn AWB off and use a custom setting.

A helpful setting to leave on is the overexposure warning, which identifies any overexposed sections within the frame, making them appear with zebra stripes. This is extremely useful when you are filming any landscape shots or general scenery shots.

When you are choosing your shooting resolution, you should always take into account where you are shooting and the type of project you are working on. Not every shot requires 4K/60fps. Select the quality you need, and remember, you can always save space on your SD card for additional shots.

When deciding on color options, many drones offer different color profiles like normal and D-Cinelike modes. In D-Cinelike, colors will look flat but will give your great flexibility in post-production. Take the time to explore the full range of manual options available.

Safety Tips

Last but no least, make sure you follow all these safety tips when shooting real estate photography.

Get Permission to Fly

Always obtain permission to fly and comply with local laws and regulations.

Survey Your Environment

Real estate photography can bring your drone into proximity with all sorts of obstacles. Take the time to explore the property for potential dangers before you take off. Hanging objects should always be identified before you begin your flight.

Use Propeller Guards

Propeller guards protect yourself, others, and the environment around you. Use propellers guards whenever possible.

Monitor Drone Status

It’s crucial that you monitor your drone status whenever you are flying. Check the battery life, speed, and any other prompts on the flight app screen.

Safety Features

Whatever drone you are using, make sure you use safety features. If you are filming outdoors, turn the Return to Home function on to allow your drone to return safely to its takeoff position.

Fly Within Line of Sight

Always fly your drone within your line of sight and pay particular attention to all of your surroundings when you are flying.

The best drones for real estate need to be safe, reliable, and produce high-quality photos and videos. DJI has numerous drones designed to exceed the needs of everyone in this field. Whether you are looking for a mini drone like Mavic Mini for everyday filming, a portable and powerful drone like Mavic Air 2 or Mavic 2, or even a professional setup like the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 or Inspire 2.0, there is an exciting lineup of drones available at the DJI Online Store for real estate photography!

Low-light Phantom 4 vs Phantom 4 Pro Test – Lab Results

Low-light Test

The video made by tester Chris So compared the low-light performance of Phantom 4 and new Phantom 4 Pro. Chris So deserves some kind of award. He braved freezing temperatures – twice – to set up the ultimate low-light comparison between the Phantom 4 and the new Phantom 4 Professional, which features a 1″-type “R” CMOS sensor. The P4 has 12.4 effective megapixels; the P4P 20 megapixels.

What Chris wanted to see was how the images compared in terms of both low light and dynamic range. How deep would the blacks look? What will happen with the highlights? How much detail will there be in mid-tones? Overall, how do images taken by the two different cameras at the same place, at the same time, look when compared with one another?

It’s one thing to look at the video (remember to check out the video description)—and another to look at the charts.

We have shown you how these two cameras compare in the lab. We ran them through an exhaustive DxO analysis that clearly showed the Phantom 4 Pro was better in a whole variety of areas, including color sensitivity, low-light performance, and more. For those of you who missed it, here is that data again. We’ll start with noise levels:

Now, a look at the dynamic range. The blue line is the P4P, showing greater dynamic range across multiple ISO settings.

Color sensitivity was also tested – and again, you can see a clear difference between the P4P and the P4. This doesn’t mean the P4 is bad, of course – when that machine came out earlier this year people were blown away by its image and video qualities. What it does mean, is that the Phantom 4 Pro is that much better.

The DJI Battery Station: An Exclusive First Look

All experienced drone users would agree: your flying experience is only as good as the batteries you keep. We’ve seen so many stories that start with “I had this great shot,” and then end with “…but then my batteries died.” It’s become evident that if you want to make your flights worthwhile, you need batteries that are fully charged and built to last.

This is what brings us the all-new DJI Battery Station, a rugged, mobile, and supercharged multi-battery charging hub. It’s specifically built to charge up to eight TB50 Intelligent Batteries at once while being capable of charging four from 0-90% in just 35 minutes. We’ve never seen anything like it, but we’re pretty sure the Battery Station will become an essential gadget for serious professionals.

So, without further delay, let’s get to know the DJI Battery Station!

Five Things the DJI Battery Station Does Really Well

Who is it for?

Should You Get the DJI Battery Station?

Five Things the DJI Battery Station Does Really Well

1. Charges many and different kinds of batteries and devices at once

What it does

The Battery Station is a robust charging powerhouse, with dedicated slots that can charge up to eight TB50 Intelligent Batteries at once. These are the batteries that power the Inspire 2, Ronin 2, and Matrice 200. Two DC charging ports are compatible with the Inspire and Phantom series, Cendence remote controllers, and WCH2 Charging Hub, which charges WB37 Intelligent Batteries for Cendence and CrystalSky. To top it all off, two USB ports let you charge any mobile device.

Why it matters

Compatibility with a wide array of professional products means that the Battery Station offers an excellent all-in-one solution for battery charging.

2. Charges batteries quickly

What it does

The Battery Station charges TB50 Intelligent Batteries in one of three modes. Normal mode is a great overall method for ordinary charging. Silent mode charges more slowly, using less power and therefore requires a slower cooling fan speed, which is especially helpful if you have to charge on a quiet set.

For users in a big time crunch, Quick Mode is a super boost. It picks two pairs (the Battery Station divides the eight TB50 charging slots into four pairs) of batteries, and uses maximum power and cooling fan speed to charge batteries from 0-95% in just 35 minutes!

Why it matters

No matter how much we plan, battery emergencies are going to happen from time to time. Instead of wasting valuable time for a recharge, Quick Mode fixes it by getting your filming drone or gimbal back up in the air in just over half an hour.

3. Discharges

What it does

An onboard Option switch in the Battery Station lets you instantly choose between charging and two distinct discharging modes — 50% and 25%. Because the Battery Station uses the energy of the inserted batteries to power the cooling fan, you don’t need to plug into a power source when discharging.

Why it matters

Discharging is an important convenience that adds longevity and portability to batteries. When not in use, it’s not healthy for batteries to retain a full charge. Discharging to 50% improves the maintainability of the battery, keeping them in good working order for a more extended period. Since TB50 batteries aren’t cheap, this is a welcome feature.

So why the 25% option? Just ask anyone who’s ever put a power bank or lithium-based battery in their check-in luggage. For safety, airlines typically require batteries in check-in luggage to not exceed a 30% charge. This option ensures that you can bring all your cells to your next location shoot with no issues.

4. Travels easily

What it does

Speaking of luggage, the Battery Station looks like your typical roll-away suitcase, just maybe a bit sturdier. It has a telescopic handle and a pair of wheels for easy transportation. It also includes a pair of lock holes for extra security and a large handle for easy carrying. The case itself is made of a rugged plastic material and is rated at IP67 when closed, making it officially dustproof and waterproof.

Why it matters

The Battery Station was built to handle bumps, drops, and any other accident, keeping a case full of valuable batteries dry, clean, and in great shape. With security features to help keep all the contents safe, no matter where you’re going, the Battery Station is a worthy travel companion.

5. Keeps everything cool

What it does

Cooling fans and vents keep batteries and the Battery Station at optimal temperatures through any charging mode and environmental condition, monitoring battery temperature in real-time. If any overheating is detected, the Battery Station will automatically cancel charging and discharging.

Why it matters

Batteries — especially professional ones like the TB50 — pack a huge amount of energy. This is great for keeping the Inspire 2 in the air, but it also comes at a potential risk. Batteries can malfunction on their own or just get worn out after years of use. Unforeseen problems may occur, like the Battery Station case closing during charging. Real-time temperature monitoring is an important feature to make sure your batteries and operators are safe at all times.

Who is it for?

A few months ago, DJI came out with the Spark Portable Battery Station, which proved a hit for users who always needed full batteries while flying their favorite mini drone on the go. This portable charging station was geared towards everyday users and hobbyists.

The DJI Battery Station was built for professionals.

Film Crews

The abilities of the Battery Station mentioned above are the kinds of features that pros on film sets have been looking for, where charging eight batteries for their Inspire 2 and Ronin 2 is a real possibility, and at times, an urgent necessity.

Extensive Inspire 2, Ronin 2, and M200 Users

We already mentioned how the Battery Station is the perfect power-up for the Inspire 2 and Ronin 2, two DJI products you’ll likely see on a major film set. But let’s not forget that the TB50 Intelligent Battery also powers the Matrice 200, a professional drone that’s built to handle situations like search and rescue, structural inspection, and firefighting. These are all applications where keeping the drone in the air for hours is a must, so having plenty of fully-charged batteries would prove a massive benefit.

Traveling Professionals

Pros will find themselves moving from place to place at a moment’s notice, so every tool needs to be as portable as possible. The Battery Station was built to last, with a hard, flight-ready plastic that can take bumps and drops, while keeping its valuable contents secure and padded. If you’re on the run, it wheels away like any personal suitcase. And since Discharge Mode works without plugging in, you can drain every battery to aircraft compliance in a pinch, right there at the check-in counter in case you forgot.

Should You Get the DJI Battery Station?

Since the Battery Station was made primarily for the TB50 Intelligent Battery, you may want to pass unless you already own an Inspire 2, Ronin 2, or Matrice 200. But what if you do own one? Well, if you often find yourself running low on battery power, need to film all day, go on location, or all of the above, you should seriously consider this durable, travel-ready charging hub.
